Bring your own bike and enjoy an (energetic) bike ride through Schoharie County on a variety of tours put together by avid cyclist and Howe Caverns employee, "Sparky" Spaulding. These routes have been put to the test by Sparky, his wife, Beth, and friends, as they have pedaled their way throughout the countryside designing routes for fellow roadies to enjoy. And what better place to start from than world famous Howe Caverns. Enjoy your visit with an underground adventure of the Great Cave, lunch or dinner at the Howe Caverns Cafe, a bike ride through rural Schoharie County, and spend the evening relaxing at the Howe Caverns Motel where each room has spectacular views of the hills you rode, and an outdoor pool.
All rides begin and end at Howe Caverns. Detailed routes are available at Howe Caverns, the Howe Caverns Motel and the Schoharie County Chamber of Commerce.
Howe Caverns Short Loop – 10.3 miles Great views of the Helderberg Mountains and the hills surrounding the Mohawk River Valley. The ride starts downhill, leading into a slight climb followed by four more good size hills with descents in between for a short respite. The remainder of the trip is gradual climbs and down grade until the final climb returning you to Howe Caverns.
Cave House Loop – 15.2 miles More great views and the ride will take you past the Cave House Museum, which was once the Hotel owned and operated by Lester Howe, founder of Howe Caverns, as well as the Iroquois Indian Museum.
Old Stone Fort Raid – 19 miles On this ride into Revolutionary War History, you will again enjoy the views of the Helderberg Mountains. You will cross over the Schoharie Creek, pass by the Tory Tavern, and then come upon The Old Stone Fort Museum – a converted church which served as a fort during the Revolutionary War. The roads you will be riding include some state highway, and should be used with caution and safety in mind.
"Doc" Reilly Memorial Bicycle Road Race Course – And More – 14.3 miles The "Doc" Reilly Memorial Bicycle Race is an annual event hosted by the Schoharie Valley Cycling Club. The race attracts hundreds of racers and their families to Schoharie County each year. The course is comprised of 13.1 mile circuits. Your ride will begin and end at Howe Caverns; therefore, adding more mileage.
A personal note from Sparky with some excellent advice for cycling Schoharie County.
